Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the WIC Project Director (Director), the Nutritionist (N) provides nutrition assessments, and counseling. Assists the Director in the development, implementation and evaluation of the nutrition education program. In the absence of the Director and Registered Dietitians, shall provide guidance and coordination for the Nutrition Assistants.
Specific Responsibilities:

Screen WIC applicants/participants for nutrition risk factors and determine eligibility for program benefits using the Integrated Statewide Information System (ISIS). Update nutrition education plan in ISIS, as needed. Complete all ISIS and manual documentation. Use ISIS backup system, when needed. 15%
- Provide nutrition counseling for participants with level 1, 2 and 3 indicators of need. Provide level 4 nutrition intervention upon completion of N requirements stated in the California WIC Program Manual (WIC 130-50). Document education provided in ISIS. 40%
- Assist in the development and implementation of group nutrtion education classes. Assess the supply of educational materials and assist the Director when ordering materials. Serve as a Lead Teacher for the group nutrition education classes. 10%
- Provide group nutrition education for participants as part of their secondary nutrition education contact. Document education provided in ISIS. Prepare to lead group education by obtaining and reading lesson plans. Obtain all materials needed for groups and prepare room. 14%
- Prescribe appropriate food instruments according to WIC Program Manual. Educate participants on WIC check use and document in ISIS. 5%
- Provide general level of Breastfeeding counseling and instruction for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Refer advanced level issues or problems to the Breastfeeding Coordinator. 1%
- Assist in distributing food instruments, scheduling, and assisting clients at reception desk and on telephone, as needed. 5%
- Perform various clerical duties such as filing, photocopying, and typing. File all client records by end of day. Less than 5%
- Maintain adequate stock of educational materials and supplies for Spanish-speaking clients. Translate materials to Spanish, as needed. Respond to Spanish speaking participant calls. 5%
- Assist Office Manager in maintaining the orderliness of the WIC offices. Maintain an adequate stock of supplies and forms. Less than 5%
- Helps to make sure classroom and waiting room are picked up and clean at the end of each day. Help coworker’s complete additional tasks as needed. Less than 5%
- Complete other duties as requested by the Director (Outreach, additional projects, etc.). Less than 4%
- Provide guidance and coordination to the WNA staff in the absence of the Director and Dietitians. Less than 1%
- Arrive and be prepared to begin work according to scheduled time. Contact Supervisor at least two weeks prior to making any changes in your schedule.
- Attend staff meetings and workshops as requested by the Director.
- Shall work well under pressure and meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.
- The employee shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, and clients.
Qualifications:
1. A bachelor’s degree in a nutrition related field meeting the Standards of Competency as noted in the California WIC Program Manual (WIC 130-50).
2. Entry-level breastfeeding training.
3. Excellent verbal and written skills in English and Spanish;
4. Able to perform work duties efficiently, accurately and effectively;
5. Able to work well with the public and as part of a health promotion team;
6. Prefer prior experience using computers.
7. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.
8. Shall complete 50 continuing education units every five years.
