Position Summary:

The Native American Health Center Physician provides direct medical services and supervises non-physician practitioners who provide medical services.  The physician is responsible for programs of preventive care as well as illness care.  He/She helps to coordinate medical programs with the services offered by other branches of the Native American Health Center such as the Dental Department and the W.I.C. program.  The physician shall report to the Medical Director.

Specific Responsibilities:

1)     Provides direct health care to clients, including exams, lab tests, and referrals when appropriate.

2)     Administer and/or prescribe medications and other treatments.

3)     Promotes health by advising patients concerning diet, hygiene and methods of disease prevention.

4)     Provides for appropriate immunizations against communicable disease.

5)     Reports births, deaths, and outbreaks of contagious diseases to proper authorities.

6)     Provides comprehensive medical services, regardless of age or sex.

7)     Supervises and directs ancillary personnel—medical assistants, nurses, and outreach workers—so that the entire health care team functions in a coordinated and efficient manner.

8)     Provides direct supervision to mid-level practitioners when appropriate.

9)     Ensures proper routing or reporting of problems that require medical follow-up, such as abnormal pap-smears, positive serologies and/or cultures for infectious diseases, and chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

10) Dispenses medications from the clinic pharmacy and supervises the maintenance of accurate pharmacy records.  Advises the clinic on what medications to stock, and assist in inventory and ordering as necessary.

11) Records information in patient’s charts as appropriate.

12) The employee shall work well under pressure, meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.

13) The employee shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, and clients.

Qualifications:

1)     Must be a licensed Internal Medicine or Family Practice MD or DO in the state of California.

2)     Have thorough knowledge of general practice, pediatrics, minor surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, and dermatology.

3)     Have special knowledge in preventive medicine.

4)     Have knowledge or willingness to learn about Native peoples and their various community resources.

5)     Have ability to relate effectively to community interest groups, agencies, and medical facilities that serve the Native community.
