NAHC Director of Planning & Policy Selected for National Leadership Position
Native American Health Center (NAHC) CEO, Martin Waukazoo, officially announced today that he has accepted the resignation of D'Shane Barnett (Mandan/Arikara) from his position as the Director of Planning & Policy, to be effective January 7, 2011. D'Shane has been employed with the health center since 2005 and has played a significant part of the executive team.
Magazine Names Frybread One of the Nation's Fattiest Foods
“Health” magazine on Tuesday named frybread as one of the 50 fattiest foods in the United States as part of a story identifying at least one less-than-healthy food item from each state. In identifying frybread as South Dakota's contribution to the food wall of shame, it said the traditional Native American dish has about 25 grams of fat. Frybread was named South Dakota's official state bread in 2005.
NAHC Establishes Committee to Address Childhood Overweight & Obesity Prevention
Native American Health Center's Nutrition & Fitness Department is spearheading the effort to organize a new committee whose mission is to find ways to prevent childhood overweight and obesity. The American Indian community is disproportionately affected by this condition and it is leading to higher rates of chronic illnesses like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, mental illness and others. The CO-OP (Childhood Overweight and Obesity Prevention) Committee will seek to find innovative clinical and cultural modalities to address this issue, so that future generations can be stronger and healthier.
