Celebrating 10 Years of the Seven Generations Scholarship Fund

“Ten years ago, we made a commitment to our community, to invest in our people and to believe in their potential. The Seven Generations Scholarship is more than financial support; it’s a reminder that our students and staff are seen, valued, and supported every step of the way.

When I look at our scholars, I don’t just see graduates. I see leaders, caregivers, advocates, and changemakers who carry their communities with them. Their success is not just their own; it ripples outward, strengthening families and future generations.

I am deeply proud of all that they have accomplished, and honored that we get to be part of their journey.”

— Natalie Aguilera, NAHC CEO

For the past decade, the Seven Generations (7G) Scholarship Fund has invested in the future of our communities, supporting Native students and Native American Health Center (NAHC) staff as they pursue their educational goals.

Now, in its 10th year, the 7G Scholarship stands as a powerful reflection of what happens when we invest in people: leaders grow, communities strengthen, and futures expand.

To honor this milestone, we partnered with photographer Irwin Lewis (Akimel O’odham) for a special photo project featuring past scholarship recipients. Each portrait represents not only where they are today, but the journey, determination, and community support that helped them get there.

Below, we highlight just a few of the many individuals whose lives have been shaped by the 7G Scholarship.

Kelli Rutherford

Blackfeet Nation / Little Shell Chippewa
BA in English, Minor in Ethnic Studies

Kelli now works in Human Resources at NAHC, where she continues to give back to the same community that supported her. The scholarship allowed her to fully experience college, even as an older student, covering essential costs like tuition, books, and even her first dorm setup.

Today, Kelli serves on the 7G Scholarship Committee and is passionate about expanding opportunities for others—including building a future internship program.

Devin Nash

Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians
Criminal Justice

Devin works as a Medical Executive Assistant at NAHC. The scholarship supported him in completing his education and continues to shape his commitment to community.

He remains connected to his Tribe through powwows and cultural events and is eager to support future scholarship recipients as a resource and mentor.

Omar Qutob

Business & Finance (Expected 2026)

Omar is balancing full-time work at NAHC with a full academic course load at CSU East Bay. The 7G Scholarship played a key role in his decision to return to school, helping him regain confidence and stay committed to his goals.

Through his work and participation in a student-managed investment fund that supports future scholarships, Omar is already contributing to the next generation.

Alani Brown

Elem Colony of Pomo Indians
BA in Theatre Arts, Minor in Psychology

Alani is now a Site Operations Manager at NAHC, where she oversees daily operations and supports multiple departments. The scholarship eased financial stress and helped her build confidence in her academic journey.

Her work at NAHC has deepened her connection to community and culture, while her continued involvement in events and scholarship efforts reflects her commitment to giving back.

Rikki Hopper

Big Valley Pomo / Kickapoo / Sac and Fox
BA in Political Science (Pre-Law)

Rikki works as a Program Coordinator in Workforce Development and is pursuing a Master’s degree at UC Berkeley with the goal of advancing into law.

She describes 7G as more than financial support; it provided a strong sense of community and belonging that helped her persist and succeed. She now hopes to mentor others and support future applicants.

Melvin Vierra

Sioux, Lakota
Studying School Psychology

Melvin is currently working as a Substance Abuse Counselor while continuing his education, with plans to transfer to UC Berkeley in 2026.

He credits the scholarship for the support it provided along his journey and remains connected to his community through local programs and cultural spaces.

Victoria Partida-Young

Taos Pueblo, Jicarilla Apache, Eastern Band Cherokee, Choctaw
BS in Biology, Minor in Chemistry

Victoria is now a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Highland Hospital. The scholarship supported her across multiple stages of her education—from books to tuition to advancing her post-baccalaureate studies.

Her connection to 7G goes back to the very beginning. Alongside Natalie Aguilera, Victoria helped lay the foundation for the scholarship, making the first outreach calls and securing one of its earliest donations from Ross Dress for Less. Today, she continues to give back by tutoring Native youth and is committed to mentoring future scholarship recipients.

JoAnne Lee

North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California
Juris Doctor (2025)

JoAnne now works with the California Tribal Families Coalition, focusing on advocacy and community-centered legal work.

The scholarship allowed her to focus on her studies and pursue meaningful opportunities in tribal law and public-interest work. She remains committed to supporting Native communities and future scholars in any way she can.

Shyh Saenz

Northern Cheyenne
BA in Communication Studies and Promotions

Now leading high-impact campaigns and initiatives across climate, public engagement, and representation, this alum credits 7G with providing both financial support and a strong sense of community.

Their journey includes national-level advocacy, including speaking at the National Congress of American Indians Annual Conference, and continued mentorship for future Native leaders.

Looking Ahead

For 10 years, the Seven Generations Scholarship Fund has helped remove barriers, uplift students, and strengthen our communities.

And this is just the beginning.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to investing in the next generation, because when one person succeeds, the entire community moves forward.
